Coffee Filters
From the invention of the first coffee filter, they have played an important role in the process of making coffee. Actually, filters are as essential as the other tools used to brew coffee, like coffee grinders, coffee pots and coffee makers.
The filters prevent the coffee grounds from mixing in the coffee, and also help to improve the extraction process of the coffee.
Ordinary paper filters can be used, and will allow you to make coffee using hot water, and will prevent coffee grounds from getting in the coffee at the end.
Different Types of Coffee Filters
Paper Filters
Paper filters are the most common type of filter. Melitta Bentts is the inventor of them. Even now, Melitta filters are still sold for commercial and personal coffee makers.
The paper filter is the most economical, easily available and disposable. Nevertheless, the paper filter is not friendly to the environment and must be disposed of after each use.
Paper filters are still extensively used and very versatile because they can be good for fine as well as for coarse grinds. Perhaps the main negative aspect of using paper filters is that they sometimes give a paper taste to the coffee.
Gold Tone Filter
The Gold Tone filter is the second type of filter. Compared to the paper filters, these are more costly as some of them are made with 23-carat gold.
Water does not interact with Gold, thus, Gold Tone Filters provide a tastier flavor. Some of the more high priced coffee makers already come with a permanent Gold Tone Filter, such as Cuisinart, which eliminates the need for purchasing the paper filters which must be disposed of.
Furthermore, Krups sells its own Krups Gold Tone Filters. They are easily cleaned, requiring only to give a quick rinse to remove the coffee grounds from the mesh.
Gold Tone Filters are also dishwasher safe. Even though they are more expensive to purchase, Gold Tone Filters will save money because they eliminate the need to keep replacing your filters.
Permanent Filters
Next there are much less expensive permanent filters; filters made of stainless steel. Some of them are even gold plated. They are less expensive than Gold Tone Filters and can be used again and again.
The Gold Tone Filters still give a better taste, however. In addition, the stainless steel filter can be cleaned in the same way as the gold ones.
Cloth Filters
Finally, there are cloth filters which are not commonly seen and are made of unbleached cloth. With cloth filters, the pores are larger therefore the finer grounds can seep through the filter and into to coffee.
These are also reusable and are usually used with drip coffee makers. But the main negative aspect of using cloth filters is that they are difficult in cleaning because the coffee grounds usually stick to the cloth.
